My old dog yelps randomly at night; what's this lump I found?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 13 years old | 30 lbs

My dog is a 13 year old beagle. She has had a tear in her ACL and had surgery when she was little. She started yelping in the middle of the night. Not constantly but just sitting there yelping. We have an 8 month old puppy and they play together. We thought maybe he hurt her leg. She will be asleep and then just randomly yelp. I have felt around her legs and she doesn't help when I touch them. I did find this though. No idea what it is or if it is affecting her.

It could be a growth of some sorts. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I would give Duchess's vet a call to make her an appointment. Best of luck.
