Why is my dog's second poop mushy after a long walk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

Im sorry if this question is kind of gross but i have to ask: during our walk my dog pooped twice, the first time it was firm but a darkish brown (normal color). He usually only poops once, but today he pooped twice, and the second time the first stool looked normal, a little lighter, but the very last one wasnt firm, it was more mushy (not diahrrea) and left residue on the floor. He hadn’t pooped since yesterday, could this be normal?

Yes, some soft/fluid stools after defecation is quite normal, especially if they have been on a long walk. Monitor closely to be sure it is not the start of diarrhoea but I would expect it to return to normal at next walk
