Can I safely postpone my unspayed dog's heat cycle for breeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 years old | 41 lbs

How can I find a doctor who can advise me on whether my unspayed dog can get treatment to postpone estrus? My veterinarian said she is unfamiliar with the topic. I might use her for breeding later and don’t want her to be spayed yet

I would call around local clinics to see if you can find a vet familiar with this topic. I see that Bella is three years old, and if you do plan on breeding her, I would not hold off for long. It's never recommended to breed dogs past five years of age. Best of luck.
