My big dog needs ACL surgery. Is Lateral Suture the right choice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 55 lbs

My dog tore her ACL and is having the Lateral Suture surgery in 2 weeks. I'm really nervous cause it's recommended dogs over 45-50lbs have the TPLO done, and my dog is 55lbs. I chose the Lateral Suture technique because of price/her age/and it's less invasive than the TPLO. Am I making a bad decision? I've heard good and bad things about both. The vet doing the surgery seems pretty confident, he said he's seen dogs much larger than Penny successfully recover from it. Recovery time on this? Thx!!

No, you aren't making a bad decision at all! Your vet wouldn't have agreed to that surgery if it was a bad choice, it wouldn't have been an option. Plus, it's great he sounds confident that Penny will do well! Recovery time is long! At least six to eight weeks. I hope this helps!
