My 6-month-old kitten has dark watery diarrhea. Why & how to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 29 days old

Hi, I have a kitten who is 6 months old, and she is having diarrhoea (dark watery stool) since Thursday, and this gets worse during the night, hours after she had her dinner. Despite that, she is not dehydrated, and is eating normally. And also she is “worm free”. Why is this happening, and what are the solutions that can help her as I am really worried for her. Thanks in advance!

Poor Gini could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a foreign body. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, a sudden change in diet, eating something rotten, or a GI illness among other things. Make sure Millie is up to date on her deworming treatments, giving her one if she is not. I can also give you a home remedy to see if that helps.
