Is my skittish canary molting or plucking feathers from stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Canary | Male

Dear Pet Coach, i took home a Yellow Fronted Canary 3 weeks ago. It is very skittish and flutters around when i approach it’s cage. It will stop singing the moment it see’s me. Recently i tried spending more time in the same room with it but at a distance. I noticed it will start preening itself when i’m in the room and sing when i leave. How can i tell if it’s moulting or feather plucking from stress? Appreciate your help please. Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out about Sober. There is no specific answer to this, besides observation. Molting will stop but stress induced will not. Viral, parasitic or other problems could do this. If the process continues, a veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
