Why does my cat take long naps after eating? Is his tummy okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 2.7 lbs

My cat ate too much today and he's been asleep for more than 4 hours straight. How would I know if his tummy is hurting? Is it okay if he sleeps a lottttt than usual when he takes a meal?? (BTW he's perfectly healthy, just wanted to know why does he take long naps after eating)

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Mellow is sleeping comfortably, I would not be concerned! Signs of an upset stomach include vomiting, vocalizing, hiding, and not wanting to eat or drink. Eating a meal stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the "rest and digest" system of the body. So it is not uncommon for cats (and even humans) to want to rest after eating. If you feel that Mellow eats too much, I recommend feeding a smaller amount of food at eat meal (rather than free-feeding and leaving a bowl full of food out all day). I hope this is helpful!
