My dog's toenail is broken and pulled. What to do until the vet opens?

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 116 lbs

My boxer seems to have pulled out half way his back right toenail. Can I do anything to help him. It's memorial weekend and my vet might not be in till Tuesday.

You can try to trim back the nail if Buster Brown will let you, but if he's upset, don't try. You can wrap it up to keep it clean and dry, and have him seen by his vet as soon as you can. Best of luck.

    Ouch, poor Bhai! Unfortunately there is no OTC pain relievers you can give him, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If he will let you, you can try to cut the nail off yourself, but it may be too painful for him and he may have to be sedated in order for it to be removed safely. Should he not let you do it, I would take Bhai into the vet today to have him sedated and have the nail removed. I would not let him try to get it off himself, as it may easily become infected. The vet can safely removed it for him.

It definitely appears to be torn at the fleshy part of the nail. These can sometimes be easily removed. You can try this at home if you are comfortable, but should be prepared for a lot of bleeding. If he is painful, he should be seen sooner rather than later if only for pain management. If he seems comfortable and is not actively bleeding, it can probably wait. Place an appropriately sized [e-collar](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar) (cone) on him to prevent licking until you see the veterinarian. Crate him or restrict his activity if possible. A fractured dewclaw may need to be removed surgically. If only the nail is broken, it should be trimmed back and wrapped lightly until healed. Hi my dog has ripped his toenail off will he be ok
Ouch, poor Buster! This will be quite painful to him and is likely bleeding a lot. The problem with it is that it can become infected. I would apply gentle pressure to stop any bleeding, and then clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. You may need to dip the area in styptic powder or corn starch to stop bleeding. I would bandage up this foot to keep it protected, and then put a sock over his foot to keep the bandage clean and dry. Put a plastic bag over the sock when Buster goes outside. You will likely need to put an Ecollar on him to keep him from chewing at the sock. You can buy one at a pet store, or you can make one at home. Keep an eye on the area, and if it appears red, swollen, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it's infected and Buster will need to see a vet. http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html

todah i woke up and saw that bruno's back nail i broken and its bleeding. clinics are closed today. what should i do?
You will need a nail clipper special for dogs, just clip the nail at the same place where it broke, it looks almost completely broken so i do not think it will hurt too bad or bleed too much. do prepare yourself to stop the bleeding with a clean cotton or swab.

My Yorkie just broke a nail and it’s hanging. She isn’t limping and is running around but it’s bleeding. Her vet is closed and I won’t be able to take her till the morning. What should I do?
If you have a small baby sock you can tape it on (just not tightly). The keep her confined to a small area so she isn’t running around and making it bleed. Hopefully this will hold you until tomorrow morning. However if she seems really painful or the bleeding doesn’t stop then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hello. Unfortunately, the only way to get this to start to heal is to clip the nail where it has broken. It will hurt, but once it is gone, your pup will actually feel much more comfortable. In my office, we clip really fast & then bandage the foot with an antibiotic cream that contains lidocaine. This numbs the nerve & allows things to heal quite nicely. While this is technically not an emergency, it is also a situation that you do not want to ignore, either. Most veterinary clinics are open to some degree. They may not allow pet parents into the hospital, but will meet you in the parking lot to take your pet inside for treatment. I would start calling around to see who is available to help with this. Poor Winston. If you have dog nail clippers, try to trim it back. Do it bit by bit, and avoid the quick. If he won't let you trim it, that means it's likely quite painful to him, so have him seen by the vet to have it treated. I hope this helps!

Poor Ruby. These can be really painful to dogs. This will have to be cut off, but I would not do it yourself because of the pain. Wrap a bandage around her paw to protect and cover it, then have her seen by a vet in the morning to have it treated. Cover the whole paw with the bandage. She may need to be sedated to have it removed, so don't feed her in the morning. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would apply something powdered to the nail (like flour or corn starch) to clot the blood. You can place a wrap but I would only leave it on for about 24 hours- no longer. After that, the bleeding should have stopped. Kisses to Tucker!

That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! If it is not bleeding you can wait until the morning for your vet to open
