Why is my older dog suddenly hacking and panting heavily?

My dog does a lot of hacking and his panting seems to have increased. Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 66 lbs

I see that Sammy is an older boy. I would be concerned that these signs could be due to something serious like heart disease. This can be common in older dogs. It could be a respiratory infection. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning to get checked out. Best of luck.
