My hamster fought another and is badly injured. What should I do?

I have a hamster ( sugar ) and this other hamster fought with him and now he has a bloody nose , paws, and a chunk of skin was ripped out ( the size of my pinkie finger ) what should I do

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that another hamster attacked Sugar. I recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to have him examined, have the wounds cleaned, and he can be given medication for pain and antibiotics. Any bite wound has the potential to become grossly infected and abscessed, which is very painful and can require surgery to resolve. In the meantime, you can try gently wiping any discharge away from the wounds with a damp cloth. I hope this is helpful!

    Thanks for reaching out about Sugar and including photos. It is difficult to determine by the pictures what is actually happening. This could be a bite wounds, puncture, broken leg. The leg appears swollen and a wound. Try gently cleaning the wound with a warm, wet, clean towel. Do not place any topical medications on the wounds as hamsters gastrointestinal tracts are very sensitive, and if ingested could cause diarrhea. Keep Sugar calm and quiet until a veterinary visit can be arranged. Good luck.

My roborovski hamster has started biting her leg and I just noticed tonight that it is bleeding. She was living with her sister, but I have separated the two bc there has recently been some aggression between them. How can I help my hamster?
Separating the hamsters was a great idea! You will probably always need to keep them separated from now on. If the wound on your hamster’s leg is severe then you will need to take her to a veterinarian as soon as possible. If it does not look too serious (like just a skin wound/abrasion) you can try applying a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment to the wound and see if that helps. Thanks for reaching out about Smores. Cat bites and scratches can often lead to significant infections, as both carry bacteria that can contaminate wounds. Providing water through a syringe if Smores is not drinking, can provide well needed hydration until an appointment can be made with a veterinarian. A bite or scratch wound will often need to be treated with systemic antibiotics. Good luck.

My cat bit my Syrian hamster on his ear and when I looked at his ear I saw a blood line but it's dry. What should I do?
Thank you for using PetCoach, sorry to hear that your hamster was bitten! If the area is no longer bleeding and your hamster has a normal level of activity, and is eating/drinking/urinating/defecating normally, you can continue to monitor for any signs of infection (discharge, swelling, or redness). If you notice these signs, you should have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can carefully trim your hamster's nails so that he does not traumatize the area while grooming and apply a very small amount (just the tip of a Q-tip) of silver sulfadiazene (SSD) or triple antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin to the area. In the future, I recommend not allowing your cat near the hamster cage, or having a very sturdy lid to avoid accidents.

thanks for reaching out about Coco and including a photo. this is likely bite wounds from aggression. As one is running away, they get bit on the rump. The two hamsters should be separated. Coco should probably see seen by a veterinarian as antibiotics might help the wounds heal more rapidly. Good luck.

Snoopy should be physically examined by your veterinarian. He may not need sutures but he may need antibiotics to prevent or treat infection. His hair looks quite matted. His lack of grooming may indicate an underlying illness or injury which should be diagnosed and addressed by your vet.

Thanks for reaching out about Peanut. You need to be careful with the antiseptic getting into the eye as they are not meant for ophthalmic use. Many topical antibiotics can also be detrimental if groomed and ingested. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess the eye and other wound care. Good luck.

Ouch, poor Cheeky! You need to separate him and put him in own cage with his own food, water, and bedding. You also need to take him into a vet immediately. This is quite a large wound and it has to be treated by a vet now. Best of luck.

Thanks for reaching out to Boop by Petco. The hole might have been caused by a perforation or an abscess that opened up. The best recommendation would be to see a veterinarian. If not, try and keep the wound clean with a warm washcloth. Do not apply anything topical such as Neosporin and this will upset the normal bacterial flora of the intestinal tract, if he grooms and ingests some. Monitor to make sure he is eating well and not loosing weight. If kept clean, it could heal up on its own. Good luck.

My hamster has a bleeding ear!?
Thank you for using Boop by Petco! Bleeding can be from trauma or an internal cause such as a ruptured vessel or severe parasitic infection. It is a little difficult to determine the exact cause without a photo, but if there is a small amount of blood, some form but gentle pressure on the area will likely stop the bleeding. You should gently trim Puky’s nails to avoid further trauma. If the bleeding does not stop, I recommend having him seen by a vet as soon as possible. I hope all is well!
