Why does my dog get bruises and wounds after vet blood tests?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 6 lbs

I’ve recently moved house and have had to leave my wonderful vet of 20 years. I’ve visited a few vets since moving and found one I quite like. My chihuahua has had two blood tests recently. After the first one I noticed two puncture wounds in his neck and one in his arm where obvious attempts were made to extract blood. On the second occasion he had a bruise on his neck. I do set high standards so I’m wondering if this sounds unreasonable.

This doesn't sound unreasonable, it's not always easy to get blood from the first attempt if the dog is small and not cooperating. the Jugular vein (neck) is in many cases the first choice of many veterinarians, especially with small dogs.
