Is it safe to hide my cat's pill in raw liver or cooked meat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 10 months old | 11.5 lbs

Is it safe to hide trixies pill (prednisolone every 24 hrs) in chicken liver or beef liver?..and can it be raw from the meat Dept or should it be cooked? Or is low sodium turkey sausage also an option? I want to have her pred compounded into a flavored treat but I did that once with amlodipine for my other cat and it was not effective in lowering his blood pressure enough, not like the pill itself, so I’m afraid compounding the pred will not be as effective either as the pill. Any opinion? Thx!!

Hello. A compounded medication will always be more expensive than the pill you have, so I would first try hiding the pill in a treat. I am just not a fan of raw meat as it could harbor bacteria, but you can try the low sodium turkey sausage, or even feline Greenies pill pockets. Some cats will take a small pill covered in butter or cream cheese. And you definitely can use a little cooked meat to hide the pill. Most compounding pharmacies are very good, some do not have very good quality control, so you do run the risk of a less than effective compounded product. If you do want to try a compounded product, make sure it is a company your veterinarian has great faith in. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
