Why do my cat's pupils stay round even when I shine a light?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

My domestic cat has round pupils at all times. I shined a light in his eyes and they stayed round... the whole colony where my cat came from all seem to have the same thing...can it be genetic ??? No other symptoms at all!!

Does it seem as if your cat can see? If so, then you probably just don’t have a dark enough room or a bright enough light to stimulate the pupillary light response. If you’re sure the cat is visual and is otherwise acting normal I would not worry about the shape of the pupils. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
