My year old cat has big round pupils that never go vertical. Should I be concerned?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dilated pupils are a sign of increased sympathetic tone, which can be due to stress or fear. I recommend trying to shine a light in Jimbob's eyes to see if the pupil's constrict appropriately. If so, I would not be concerned. If you are concerned that Jimbob may not be able to see, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

Does it seem as if your cat can see? If so, then you probably just don’t have a dark enough room or a bright enough light to stimulate the pupillary light response. If you’re sure the cat is visual and is otherwise acting normal I would not worry about the shape of the pupils. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
