How can I stop my rescue dog from being aggressive to guests?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old

My husband and I rescued a dog from the shelter back in January, he showed signs of fear and anxiety as well as being very shy. We were asurred by them that he would warm up and needed time. He has warmed up and has been the most amazing dog for me. The issue is he's no longer shy, now he's very aggressive to guests that come over. His fur stands up, he growls, barks, nips and lunges I've tried everything but I can't get him to stop and it's making it difficult to have friends over.

Oh wow, that is tough. It sounds like Chester is being protective of his home. I never recommend owners work with aggressive dogs on their own due to safety reasons. I would speak to his vet for a referral to a professional behavior expert to deal with this behavior. I hope this helps.
