Can my cat get lead poisoning from licking lead dust after shooting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

I recently took up rifle shooting as a hobby with the rifle close to my head. Have gone around 8 times. Can my cat get lead poisoning from licking my head and grooming himself? Lead dust sprays from rifle and gets on clothes...then transferred to bed and cat groom's himself... No lead poisoning symptoms.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. While I do not know much about rifles and how much lead dust comes off of them, if you are concerned about lead dust getting on you while you are shooting, I highly recommend washing this off before letting your cat lick you. Signs of lead poisoning may not occur until there is a high cumulative effect of lead in Chuck's body. To avoid this risk, I recommend cleaning the dust off of you and/or not letting Chuck lick you after you have gone shooting. I hope this is helpful!
