Why does my boxer puppy have vaginitis, hair loss, and itchy skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 55 lbs

My 1yr old boxer still has puppy vaginitis. Did antibiotics, ultrasound of bladder, changed food to lamb and rice. They tested discharge it is resistant e-coli. I'm a groomer and she gets the best of shampoos and conditioning but every couple of months her hair on her back literally falls out.. she is very itchy. Now she has pussy bumps under her tail and on rectum. No fleas or mites. She is otherwise very happy active eats good.

The bumps are not anything I would be overly concerned with - they are like pimples. I suggest you wipe the area daily with these medicated wipes. ( https://www.allivet.com/p-8105-preva-medicated-wipes-120-ct.aspx ) As for the vaginitis, it usually goes away on it's own once they have had their first heat or are spayed. If you were wanting to breed her then you may have issues since she has a resistant E.coli. That may keep her from conceiving. The other reason for chronic vaginitis can be due to abnormal vulvar conformation. If the vulva is inverted then this could be the problem. This can be corrected with surgery.
