My dog's neuter incision is swollen, open, or has discharge. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 26 lbs

My dog was neutered two days ago and I am concerned about his incision site. When I picked him up they didn’t say anything about needing to get him a cone. When I took him in for his follow up this morning they said that his site was pretty swollen and told me to keep an eye on it. I got him a come at the vet this time and left it on him while I was at work. When I got home I was checking his site noticed that it was still swollen and looked like it had opened a bit, possibly had some discharge.

I am sorry to hear about Ollie! I would recommend following up with your veterinarian, as if the wound has some discharge they may need to prescribe antibiotics or may want to examine the area again. If the incision is coming open, depending on how the large the incision is they may try to close it with tissue glue, or may leave it open depending on the appearance.
