How to stop my husky's severe separation anxiety and tail chewing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 35 lbs

My 2 1/2 year old male husky Cole, (we just adopted him 3 months ago), has severe separation anxiety. Has broken 3 kennels and a tooth while we are at work. He's recently started chewing his tail so bad it bleeds. Have tried CBD & they do nothing. We also make sure he gets excercise & play but he never wants to play! I'm afraid there's other issues that could be causing him to chew at his tail since it just started. What should we do for the anxiety & also how do we treat his chewed tail?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Coal. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian for a behavioral consultation. His anxiety sounds severe especially if he has already harmed himself. He will likely need anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications to help him adjust to time alone. The tail can be addressed at the same visit. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him to prevent any further self trauma as tail wounds can be hard to heal. I hope this information helps!
