My dog bites non-cancerous growths. Are there surgery alternatives?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | spayed | 8 years and 9 months old | 15 lbs

My dog zoey has grown little tumor growths for the past few years. They have been tested and they are not cancer. If she can reach them, she bites them until they bleed. The vet surgically removed them last summer, but she has grown back three more. The vet says they are still not cancer, but wants to do another surgery so she doesn't get infected. Is there another way to get her to stop biting them? The surgery is very expensive and very hard on her body - she is a little older.

Hello. Are these warts? These are the most common non-cancerous growths we see, & they are especially common on poodles. If surgery concerns you, please talk to your vet about freezing the growths off using a special liquid nitrogen product available to vets called Verruca Freeze. It is not super cheap, but it does not require any anesthesia to use. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
