Why does my dog have open wounds on her body with no obvious injury?

My dog, Molly, recently got terrible open wounds under her front left leg, neck and chest. No injury that we know of. What could be the possible cause and what is the condition?

There are many things that can cause this: * trauma (that you do not know about) * autoimmune disease * cancer * severe bacterial infection At her age, I would be worried about this coming up all of a sudden. I suggest you get her to your vet for an examination.

    From what I can tell (the photos are very grainy), the wound appears to be healing fine. I suggest you continue treatment as your vet recommended for now. I strongly recommend you take her back to your vet for a progress check-up in about 5-7 days. They will be able to tell you better if it looks to be healing well since they saw the initial injury.

This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Poor guy. THis is a complicated case indeed. Some possible causes for wounds like this are: a rare fungal infection, a resistant staph infection, or even cancer (lower on the list). The vet will need to do a culture of the leg and also check for fungi to hopefully find the culprit so that we can tailor our treatment to the underlying cause here. I would also consider taking your pet to an internal medicine veterinarian instead of your regular DVM, due to the severe nature of these wounds. This will also help expedite the process of coming up with an accurate diagnosis here. I do hope that with this additional information your vet can find the cause quickly so that we get these wounds to heal well. Best of luck and take care.

my dog has sores all over belly chest legs and some other parts of body some are bleeding what could this be and could she give it to humans and how would I treat it?
She could have a skin infection, allergic dermatitis, mites, or an auto immune disease. She needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, culture, and/or biopsy to diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. She may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, or other medications to treat. More than likely, it is not contagious but it really needs to be diagnosed to know for sure.

My border colie and retriever mix male, 11 yrs old has scabs on his stomach, and open sore on his leg. Its been wet here and the grass has gotten tall at times. Not seeing fleas or ticks. But I'm very concerned.
I would recommend that Chance have these wounds checked out by a veterinarian. They could be caused by hotspots, allergies, bacterial skin infections, fleas, mites, among a few others. Since they are spread out over the body, Chance would probably benefit from oral prescription antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, in addition to treating the originating cause.

Yesterday our dog appeared with three open sores, look like they were blisters and now open.. small amt of bleeding.. Not sure if she got into something or not. She does not seem to be in pain. just wipes at it when we put antibiotic cream on it....
Oh goodness. Those wounds look angry. I would highly encourage you to have her seen by a veterinarian. Bacterial or fungal infection is possible, but also immune mediated issues are possible as well. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

What are these open wounds from? Can they be an internal problem? My dog is a english staffordshire terrier mix that’s 12.5 years old and is an indoor dog, but I let her go out briefly to roam the backyard on her own for five minutes when she goes
It is very difficult to tell from the photo but it almost looks like she was bitten by something. Any chance another dog or a cat could have bitten her? It is also hard to tell if there is any swelling. Is there? If there is swelling, I definitely suggest you have your vet take a look at her to be on the safe side. If there is no swelling you can try applying some Neosprorin topically to the wounds (don't get it in the eye, you only need a very thin layer) for the next few days - if no improvement or she gets more lesions then she should definitely see the vet at that point. Also, do not use any hydrogen peroxide or other medications on wounds around the eye. If you want to wash it just use warm water soaked cotton balls. Hope this helps. The street dog has an open wound since about 4 months. The wound got infected real bad and we started cleaning and dressing the wound for about a week. We cannot see any significant improvement. The reason of wound is unknown. I suspect it to be skin
A non-healing wound is often cancer. There are other possibilities: it could be a resistant bacterial infection. a foreign object in the skin (like a small piece of wood, grass or a bone fragment) that is causing it not to heal, it could be an auto-immune disease, etc. He needs to see a vet for an exam and some testing. There is no way we can give you a definitive diagnosis over the internet. The wound needs to be cultured an biopsied.

She has had the wound in image since 2-3 days. I'm worried. What should I do?
This could be more than one thing- ringworm, fungal infection, parasites, bacterial infection, allergies- if the wound does not seem to get better in the next couple weeks you should take her to the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

Some sort of wound under chin and legs. Not very painful..plz help
This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. That's pretty severe for a pressure sore, and it looks like Stella sleeps on a comfortable bed. Pressure sores usually occur from a dog lying on a hard service. In addition, they don't show up like this all of a sudden, they get worse slowly over time. I'm concerned this could be from an injury. You need to have her seen by a vet in the morning to have this diagnosed and treated.
