Should I separate my older cat still nursing from a new litter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 17 days old | 5 lbs

The mother cat (Xena) gave birth to hercules on 3/4/19. Xena had a new litter of 6 kittens just yesterday (5/20/19). Hercules seems to still be nursing from Xena every so often. We are wondering if we should force them to separate as this is robbing milk from the new litter? Also they dont want to be separated. Xena is following anywhere hercules goes despite leaving the litter behind. Should we be worried and do something? Or is this normal?

Yes, you need to separate Hercules from Xena. All that milk should go to her newborn kittens, and she needs to keep her focus on the kittens only. I would keep Xena in a room by herself that Hercules has no access to so he cannot nurse.
