My dog has an ACL tear. Should he wear a knee brace before surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

Found out my dog had an acl tear today, vet said he needs surgery but should he have a brace until then to stabilize his knee join? Vet said he does not, they put him on anti inflammatory medicine and glucosamine vitamin. Vet said he doesn’t need a knee joint. Wanted second opinion.

Braces are rarely used if surgery is an option. In small dogs, they are not usually needed. Braces can cause some issues because the fit has to be absolutely perfect to avoid rubbing the skin or causing other joint damage. The best thing to do is “bed rest” and pain medications as prescribed by your vet.
