My dog ate bones. What should I do and what symptoms to watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I saw my dog Babu eating bones (mutton), when I went down, I saw some medium sized bones are fallen here & there. And I have seen him chew something, now my question is he chewed & swallowed any bone or meat? If accidentally bones, then what to do? What symptoms to look out for & within how many days it will show off?

Bones can cause dental problems like broken teeth, and GI problems like obstruction and perforation. I would watch Babu for now. If you see a loss of appetite, him chewing on only one side of mouth or refusing to eat hard food, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his poop, or lethargy, have him seen by a vet immediately. It can take a couple of days to see signs, or you may see signs within 24 hours. I hope this helps.

Hello. Monitor eating and pooping carefully for the next 3 days. Also watch for sleepiness, pain when you touch his abdomen, vomiting or diarrhea. It is a good idea to boil some plain rice and feed this to 'pack' the bone. Feed small frequent meals for the next few days. Any vomiting, pain in the abdomen, or not wanting to eat and you need to take him to a vet right away.
