My dog's eye is still painful after surgery. Should I see the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 4.5 lbs

I have a 7 year old female chihuahua who recently had a head injury & a proptosis. Stitches from her tarsorrhaphy removed May 3rd. My vet said her vision was perfect and her eye was just lazy. She's definitely blind, her pupil is dilated so much you can barely see her iris. She's been scratching at it, deliberately covering it, and rubbing her head starting from the back of her ears down to her face. That lasted 10 mins. Should I take her to the vet? Everyone thinks I'm being overdramatic

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Butters. I do recommend that she sees her veterinarian again as her eye still sounds painful. Her veterinarian may prescribe an eye medication to help or even check the eye for a scratch across the surface. The sutures could have irritated her eye a bit. In the meantime, place an E-collar on her to prevent her from scratching and causing self trauma. I hope this information helps!
