Why is my dog itching, losing hair, and shaking from anxiety?

Hi. For Toffee's skin looks pretty severe with redness, hair loss, and what looks like dermatitis. He most likely has an underlying allergy. This can be to the protein in the food, or environmental allergens. Other possibilities for this presentation include a deep skin infection, ectoparasites, immune mediated conditions, or low thyroid. No matter the cause, it looks like he may be pretty miserable. He will need a exam and prescription medications from your veterinarian, a long with some skin testing to try to find the cause. It does look like Toby's skin is quite irritated! The small bumps could mean that there is bacteria in his skin (also known as pyoderma) and he should see a vet for examination and appropriate medications. However, there is usually an underlying cause for the itching and subsequent infection. The most common causes would be fleas, ticks, mites, or allergies. Allergies can be from a range of things, including flea saliva, food proteins like chicken or beef, or the environment like dust, pollen, mold, or grass. If Toby has a food allergy, he may benefit from a novel protein diet or a prescription dog food for allergies. These are good things to discuss with your vet. While you wait for his appointment, try to prevent Toby from further itching his inflamed skin to prevent further damage. You can cover him with a dog or human shirt or try to put socks on his feet. It is hard to tell from the picture, but if her nose is affected as well then I would be more concerned. Not could be just an infection but the location make me more concerned about an immune mediated disorder affecting the skin. If the antibiotics don’t resolve the problem then I would encourage you to biopsy the skin. This is the best chance at getting you an answer and to stream line the best course of treatment. Hello. Toby has a type of dermatitis going on, but the underlying cause cannot be determined just from a photo. It could have a bacterial, autoimmune, fungal or even parasitic ( mange mites ) cause. Your veterinarian can use a couple of rather simple diagnostic aids ( skin scrapes, hair plucks, dermatophyte cultures ) to determine the cause of the hair loss & lesions, then the correct treatment can be started to resolve this. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern! What you are describing sounds as though Toby may be dealing with a skin allergy. I would recommend bathing with a shampoo such as douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on. If this does not help, I would have Toby examined by a veterinarian for the most appropriate treatment recommendations. I would recommend having your veterinarian take a look at Toby's skin. It may just be an area of irritation, it can be a hotspot, growth, etc. Without examining it, it is hard to tell. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

If it is bothering Toby to the point where he is chewing / licking it raw, I would recommend bringing him to a veterinarian to have this examined so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Poor Tobias! Thank you for providing pictures of his back. This behavior is commonly caused by flea, and if he isn't up to date on his flea medications, I can give you a flea treatment program for him. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If Tobias is up to date on his flea treatment, then he could be suffering from allergies or mites causing his symptoms and I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam tomorrow. I would recommend that you have Lucy examined by a vet. Itchy ears isn't often a sign of anxiety, but it could indicate infection, which is easily treated. The skin in your picture also looks very irritated. The vet can figure out what is causing her to itchy so badly and recommend treatments to start. They can also discuss her separation anxiety and recommend supplements or medications that can help her while you are gone for the day.

It sounds like he could have some allergies with a secondary skin infection. He really should be seen by a vet to diagnose and treat. Your vet can do a skin scrape, cytology, and or culture to help diagnose. He may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, corticosteroid, hypoallergenic diet, and/or other medications. You could also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, and add Free Form Snip Tips to his diet to see if that helps keep his skin and coat healthy. If you can't take him to a vet, you might be able to find a mobile vet that can come to your house to treat him. Also make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, or Advantage to prevent fleas and ticks.
