My senior dog had a seizure. Should I take her to an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 12 year old coonhound just suffered from her first every known seizures, 2 grand Mal an hour apart. With her age and health I don’t know how many interventions I’d like to take at an emergency vet clinic. We don’t have 24/7 vet on call at our clinic, the closest one is an hour away. I’m fearful for what the consequences of just keeping an eye on her over night or if it’s crucial to bring her to a vet anyway just to be looked at.

Seizures that are starting at this age are usually very bad news, i would strongly recommend taking her to the nearest emergency center right away, bear in mind this is likely a terminal condition but you can't leave her at home seizing without getting treated.
