My dog is straining to poop, red and inflamed. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Vizsla | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 47 lbs

I noticed my dog trying to poop for like 30 minutes. He’s constantly trying to go outside. He’s licking the area and seems very uncomfortable. When I checked it looks very red and inflammed, is this a medical emergency or can I wait until tomorrow to take him to the vet?

I am sorry to hear about Mario. If his energy level has been normal today and he is not vomiting, and has been eating and drinking, and he is able to relax and go to sleep then he can probably wait until the morning. If, however, he has been vomiting, is lethargic, or he is unable to rest then you may consider a trip to the emergency vet.
