My dog has a wound on her face. What signs of infection to look for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 61 lbs

After returning home from work, I noticed that my dog had an odd looking wound on her face. I can’t tell if it’s a mole that got injured or if it is swollen. I washed it out with soap, water, & then peroxide. I also put some bacitracin on it. Is there anything I should keep an eye out for? Or anything I can be concerned about?

Poor Brooklyn. I'd be concerned about infection. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

That looks more like a skin infection then anything else. I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian. These types of infections can get deep in the tissue and often need systemic medications to heal. A yeast infection is also common, especially in this breed. Best of luck.
