Is it too late for my 4-year-old dog to get her first rabies shot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 40 lbs

Can a dog, 4 years of age, be given a rabies shot? This would be her first one because my parents didnt know they needed to go to a vet to do the rabies. However she did have all her puppy shots, administered to her by my grandma.

Hello. Yes, a 4 year old dog can & should have a rabies vaccination administered by a veterinarian. It is never too late to do this. Meeka will need a booster in 1 year, but after this one year booster, you may elect ( & if your veterinarian offers this ), a rabies booster every 3 years thereafter. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
