My dog ate toy stuffing and threw up. Should I fast him and how long?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 23 lbs

My dog this morning chewed his toy and ate some of the stuffing in it, I think this made his stomach upset and he threw up all his food he had eaten the first time and just stomach acid the second. He hasn’t thrown up since but I read I should fast him so his stomach can rest. I just wanted to know if he’ll be okay and how long I should fast time or if his toy stuffing can be digested

This toy stuffing may pass without problem. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Poor guy. I would recommend fasting him for 12 hrs and then try feeding him a small portion of his regular food or a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese in small portions for the next few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. Hopefully this is a one time incident and he doesn't need further care from your vet. Best wishes with Louie moving forward and I hope his vomiting doesn't continue. Take care!
