How to help my dog with anxiety from loud noises and being alone?

My mothers dog has anxiety. What can we do to help the dog with this? He is terrified of loud sounds and being home by him self. He is not home alone to long. There recently was construction near my mothers house and we blame the sounds of that for part of his anxiety. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old
