How to help my dog with a smelly armpit growth before surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Airedale Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 years and 10 months old | 70 lbs

My dog has a growth in his armpit. Its grown in size in the last couple of weeks (from a jelly bean to a large walnut). The vet gave us antibiotics. Since then its has started pussing and smells terrible. We have an appointment to get it removed, but it isn't for another 10 days. We get his blood work done on Tuesday & are hoping they'll move up his surgery, but in the mean time is there anything I can do for the smell and to help him? He is wearing a cone now bc he wouldn't stop licking it.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm so sorry to hear what Jack is going through. I do agree moving the surgery up is ideal. In the meantime, a warm compress to the area 3-4 times a day may be helpful as well. Good luck!
