My dog's open wound won't heal. Could it be cancer or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

The street dog has an open wound since about 4 months. The wound got infected real bad and we started cleaning and dressing the wound for about a week. We cannot see any significant improvement. The reason of wound is unknown. I suspect it to be skin cancer as I can see some patches on other parts of the body.

A non-healing wound is often cancer. There are other possibilities: it could be a resistant bacterial infection. a foreign object in the skin (like a small piece of wood, grass or a bone fragment) that is causing it not to heal, it could be an auto-immune disease, etc. He needs to see a vet for an exam and some testing. There is no way we can give you a definitive diagnosis over the internet. The wound needs to be cultured an biopsied.
