Why is my canary shedding feathers, not singing, and has scaly head?

Pet's info: Bird | Canary | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 0.1 lbs

Hello there, I have a 2 yrs old male canary who has been preening all day and losing lots of feathers for the past 4 months, and he’s stopped singing since then. He eats mixed seeds (about 1 table spoon a day) and lots of veggies (like he would eat half a cucumber and a full lettuce leaf daily) I checked the skin on his head and it looked a little scaly to me. I just want to know if this is normal or not. I can’t afford taking him to a vet. I used to take him out of his cage but I stopped

Thanks for reaching out about Silver and including photos. Stress can cause shedding, but also poor nutriton. Lettuce does not have much calcium or other vitamins, nor does cucumber. A wide variety of vegetables (including carrots, yams, brocolli, collards, etc) in addition to a protein source (sprouted seeds, chopped beans) are important for feather growth. Feathers are possible but usually contagious from one bird to another. Improve the diet, provide bathing options. Good luck.
