My puppy isn't feeling well, has swollen belly and painful lump. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 20 days old | 23 lbs

I have a 15 wk old pit pup I notice today she wasn't acting like she feels well. She has several things I've noticed wrong with her since I've got her at 4 weeks. I believe they r birth defects but today her belly is swollen and under her lower left ribs it feels like a large knot I know ribs are hard but I can literally feel something under them and when she stands there is a knot right below the ribs towards her buttocks she acts like it's painful or at the very least uncomfortable

I am sorry to hear about your concerns for your puppy! I would recommend examination by a veterinarian as soon as possible if she is acting painful or lethargic. If there is a knot or swelling under the skin on the belly it is possible she could have a hernia https://www.petcoach.co/article/inguinal-umbilical-and-diaphragmatic-hernias-in-dogs/ . If the area has increased in size/looks red/is painful or hard then this is concerning and should be examined right away. Without examining your dog we cannot tell if this is the problem, just that it is a possibility.
