Dog eye discharge, eyelid divot: Could it be an ulcer? How to clean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 11.9 lbs

Bentley has a lot of chronic allergy issues especially with constant eye goo/discharge (even with daily dry eye drops, apoquel). I noticed theres a tiny little divot in the bottom of his eyelid. Vet said just keep an eye on it. Is there a big concern or any signs to look out for that could be an indication of a corneal ulcer or anything? also, what’s the best kind of washcloth to use to clean the eyes? cotton pads don’t seem to help moisten the hard crust or work too well. thanks in advance!

I am sorry to hear about Bentley. From this photo it looks like what you are pointing to could have been from an eyelid injury. It shouldn't affect the cornea as long as the lids can still close normally. Signs of corneal irritation would be cloudiness to the cornea, redness to the eye, rubbing the eye/squinting the lids. I would consider baby washcloths for the eyes- the material is very soft compared to normal washcloths.
