My dog accidentally ate a 5mg desloratadine pill. Is it safe?

What happens if a dog takes a pill that has desloratadine? (it didn’t happen, just curious! also the pills are 5mg)

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Desloratidine is an antihistamine or allergy medication. It is typically safe for dogs, especially at such a low dose. However, other contents of the pill may be harmful and can cause sedation or other aide effects. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any questions you have!

Hello, Thanks for the good photograph. Children's claritin, or Loratidine 5mg tablets are often prescribed to dogs and mild overdoses are generally not serious. Moderate to severe overdoses have resulted in pets requiring hospitalization and supportive care (like IV fluids) but none have had long term serious effects or died from it. Kingsley's prescribed dose would be one tablet per day. It looks like that is all he consumed from this photo. If he consumed more than that, please monitor him closely over the next 24 hours and take him to a veterinarian if he begins to display any changes in behavior, lethargy, or vomiting. Hi my dog ate about 7 pills of 10mg Loratidine. Im not sure of the time she ingested it, she somehow was able to get on top of my table. She's half chihuahua and bich-poo, weighs less than 4lbs. She ate her food and i dont see any symptoms except she
I'm so sorry that Moet is having this problem. We most commonly see some GI upset (vomiting or diarrhea) and/or sedation with overdoses of Loratidine, but we also have a form of Loratidine that also has a decongestant in it (pseudoephedrine) which is VERY toxic to dogs. If the pills contained anything other than loraditine, please try to get Moet veterinary care immediately. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My dog swallowed 1 loratadine tab
Oh no, Toffee! First of all, determine if Toffee ingested Claritin (loratadine alone) or Claritin-D (loratadine with pseudoephedrine). If she consumed Claritin-D, she should go to the vet immediately so that vomiting can be induced and so that she can be monitored, as this can cause significant heart rate elevations and neurologic signs. Also closely read the packaging material to assure that xylitol is not present in this particular tablet. It is used in some tablet forms of loratadine and is a bigger concern than the loratadine itself, as it is highly toxic to dogs (liver damage, low blood sugar, etc.). If you are unsure if xylitol is present, I recommend calling the company on the packaging or the ASPCA animal poison control center (888-426-4435). If xylitol is present, she will need to go the vet immediately to have vomiting induced and supportive therapy started. After ruling out ingestion of a pseudoephedrine-containg product and the absence of xylitol, there are likely no majo

My dog got into a bottle of Claritin. May have ingested some. What should I do
While a pill or two may not cause any harm other than increased drowsiness, if your dog got into a large or unknown amount it is best to seek veterinary care immediately or contact your local Animal Poison Control (if you are in the US you can call 888-426-4435 however there is a fee to use this service). They can provide treatment or let you know if the dose ingested is harmful. You may see signs like extreme drowsiness, or paradoxical reactions such as an increase in activity such as drooling, vomiting, etc. If you are seeing these signs, seek care immediately.

My 20 lb 1 year old dog ate about 50 10mg claritin tabs
Hello. While this is not a reported lethal dose, it can result in very serious clinical signs. I would strongly encourage you to take Dobby to the nearest veterinary clinic where the pills can be safely removed & Dobby monitored if this is needed. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

My 35 pound goldendoodle got into my dad's 10mg zyrtec pills this morning. He isn't sure how many she actually ate but believes it was between 1-5. What should we do?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! She is adorable! No need to be concerned. This medication has a wide therapeutic index and even if she had 5 tablets that would be well within an acceptable range. She may be a bit drowsy perhaps for the next 6-8 hours. She should be fine. Have a good weekend!

My corgi Chihuahua is about 16 pounds. Is it ok to give her 10mg of loratadine?
That dose is safe. It is not labeled for use in dogs, so I would recommend that you discuss its use in your dog with your veterinarian. However, again there is no known problem with giving your dog that dose. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

My 5 month old border terrier has just eaten my hay fever tablet. He snaffled it up before i could bend down and pick it up. it was a 10mg certrizine Hydrochloride tablet. last time he was weighed at vets he was 5.5 kg. What should I do please
Cetirizine is an antihistamine and it is a drug that dogs can take. The normal dose for a dog is 0.5mg/# so at 5.5kg his dose is 6mg. At 10mg I don't think he will have much side effects if at all. The most common adverse effects of cetirizine are sedation, lethargy, vomiting, drooling (hypersalivation), and lack of appetite. These are often self-limiting meaning they will go away on their own once the drug has been metabolized out of his body. I really would not worry too much about this. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I have my 85 lb dog a 60mg Dexilant pill. Will he be ok?
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Hudson. He should be ok. While Dexilant isn't a drug regularly used in veterinary medicine, I found information that states "According to toxicity studies there was no effect from the drug on dogs when given at a dose of 5mg per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight for several days in a row." With his weight of 85 pounds, there will be no issues. Just do not give him anymore. I hope this helps!
