My dog's paw hot spot is swollen. Is this normal? What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | spayed | 7 years and 1 month old | 60 lbs

Hi there, my 6 year old Siberian husky has a history with hot spots. For the past few weeks she has what looks like a hot spot on her back paw. She’s been biting/licking it. We have wrapped it several times to keep her from touching it but when we take it off to let it breath, she’s back at it. We noticed today her paw is very swollen. Is this a normal symptom of irritated hot spots? What should we do?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I do not recommend wrapping the paw itself, as this can cause more damage to the skin, swelling, and trap moisture and bacteria. Meeka needs to wear an Elizabethan (cone) collar AT ALL TIMES until this spot has resolved. Any time she licks this spot she introduces more bacteria from her mouth and delays healing. I would not put anything topical on the hot spot. This should heal on its own as long as Meeka is not able to continue to traumatize it. I hope this is helpful!
