My male dog's penis is bleeding after getting excited. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 16 days old

Teddy got over excited which resulted in an erection however I noticed blood on on of him legs. After a closer look I discovered the blood was coming from his penis. Teddy is not my dog so I am unsure if he is intact or not. What could cause this bleeding?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Blood from the penis can be due to prostatitis, which is inflammation/infection of the prostate. This is often treated with antibiotics (commonly Baytril or enrofloxacin), and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Other causes of blood from the penis can be a severe urinary tract infection, causing the urine to be blood-tinged. I recommend having Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian who should perform a rectal exam to palpate Teddy's prostate. Your vet can also perform a urinalysis to look for evidence of infection. I hope this is helpful!
