My semi-feral cat has tail sores. How can I treat them at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 7 lbs

I have a semi feral cat who is having sores on her tail. See attached pic. The sores weep a little, and she does lick then, but they don’t seem to bother her that much. Is there a common cause for this? It’s only on yer tail. Been there a few weeks. Bringing her to the vet would be a huge, ugly task, involving trapping her and probably sedating her. So I’d like to see if I can try fixing it without bringing her in.

A flea allergy often causes irritation at the tail base or top of the tail. It could be some other cause of inflammation as well, but I would recommend that you start her on a good monthly flea product if she's not already on something. You can try a product such this: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/zymox-spray-with-5-hydrocortisone. Also, put an e-collar on her to prevent her from licking at it; and if its not improving within a few days, arrange for her to see a vet. You may be able to find a house call vet or mobile vet in your area who would come to your home, this may make it easier for you both. Thanks for asking PetCoach!
