Are feral cat mom's eye issues and kittens' crusty eyes related?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

A feral cat that I've been watching for over a year had kittens. Recently the mom cat had her third eye lid raised in one eye. 2 days later, the eyelid went down, but that eye doesn't dialate as well as the other. She's moving around and doesn't seem sick. Also, the kittens are moving and everything but have slightly crusty eyes. Could the two be related?

Yes, some chronic upper respiratory infections can relapse due to the stress of labour and delivery and are easily then transmitted to the kittens (that is how the infections survive so well!). Monitor the kittens closely - they may need treating especially if the eyes are closed shut or red and inflamed
