Why does my dog's stomach feel firm an hour after eating? Normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

I’ve noticed sometimes around an hour later after my dog eats his stomach feels firmer (not bloated). It’s also more firm under the ribs, it gets softer a little down. I’ve also noticed it happens more often when he’s eating changes a bit, as in the first time i remember this happening he ate more than he was used to (not in a day but in a meal), or when he eats earlier (for example, if he ate at 7am and then at 11/12 instead of the usual 2pm). Is this normal? (his stool is normal too)

As long as your dog is having normal bowel movements, normal energy levels, no vomiting, and normal appetite I would not be concerned. The dog stomach does lie at the cranial/front end of the abdomen, so feeling a firmness could just be his full stomach that is working to digest food.
