Why is my cat's ear so itchy it's bleeding? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 8 lbs

My cat has been itching her ear non-stop. I thought it was just a normal thing for her to do to maybe get rid of some ear wax but she never stopped. She is itching her ear so bad that it is bleeding and I am not sure if there is anything on my end that I can do. Why might her ear be so itchy and why for so long? Any tips?

Poor Cinnamon Toast (I love her name!). It sounds like she has an ear infection, and it's pretty bad if she is scratching it until it bleeds. In cats, ear infections can be caused by yeast, bacteria, or ear mites. You need to take her into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose if she does have an ear infection, what's causing it, and can prescribe treatment for her. Best of luck.
