Why are my cat's eyes red and gunky after vet treatment failed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

My cat has been “bleeding” from her eyes (reddish, gunky tears.) We took her to the vet, but they said they couldn’t find any abscesses behind the eyes. We put her on antibiotic eye drops for a week but they didn’t work. Got any ideas of what this could be?

How are her teeth? Sometimes animals can have eye discharge when they have a toothroot abscess. I would talk to your veterinarian about this. If her teeth look good I would consider going to an ophthalmologist. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
