Dog struggling with mucus in stool after new wet food. Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 14 lbs

Iggy has recently been put on Atopica for his allergies and I’ve changed his diet from Royal Canin hydrolized kibble to Instinct brand wet food in the duck and rabbit flavors. The medicine is working wonders on him, and he loves the new food. However, he just had a bowel movement and there was a lot of mucus, and he looked like he was struggling a bit. Could it just be from the diet change? Or should I take him to the vet. Otherwise his normal happy playful self, with no other cause for worry.

Diet change, especially abruptly, can certainly cause mucousy stool and even loose stool. I would recommend monitoring iggy for the next few days and if this continues without resolving on its own, its best to get him seen by your vet. You can also opt to just transition him back to the Royal Canin hydrolyzed diet since that seemed to agree with him GI tract. You can also start a probiotic such as Fortiflora (available on Chewy.com) to see if this will help get the bacterial flora in his gut back to normal. I hope that your pet Iggy is able to normalize his stools soon! Best wishes and take care.
