What's a safe monthly weight loss for my dog with a leg injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 5 years and 11 months old | 78 lbs

Lucy has a cruciate ligament injury on her right back leg. She has muscle atrophy as well. It was diagnosed a month ago. She has metacam if she seem to be more uncomfortable. Her weight was 96.8 lbs a month ago and today she was 96.2 lbs. Her vet said to cut her food down from 3 cups of dry food to 2 cups a day. She doesn't really get exercise due to her leg. What is a normal or safe amount of weight to lose in a month

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. Dogs should lose 1-2% of their body weight per week. This will result in a healthy amount of weight loss for her. For her size, this is approximately 1-2 pounds per week so 4-8 pounds in a month. I hope this information helps!
