My cat is straining, bloated, and drinking more. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 16 years and 4 months old | 19.2 lbs

My cat is having the following symptoms Straining to defecate yet having around 2 bowel movements/day Bloated belly Smelly rear end w/irritation to the skin in that area Higher volume of urination (not higher frequency) &increased water consumption He's had UTI issues in the past but these are unusual symptoms that he hasn't displayed before. Any idea what the cause could be and does it require an emergency vet visit?

This sounds like possibly an intestinal parasite issue but the increased water consumption and urination is concerning; those can be signs of diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's disease, etc). I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. I do not think it is an emergency so you can just make him a regular appointment.
