Why is my dog's poop dark, mushy, and mucousy after a diet change?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 16 lbs

I've been feeding my dog Dr. Harvey's Canine Health, along with 4 oz of protein (mostly ground turkey) & 1/2 tsp. of oil per meal for a little over a month & have noticed a change in his stools that I'm unsure about. They're very dark brown on the outside & a little mushy (but still formed). Sometimes the last little bit of stool is either very soft or mucousy. His stools also have little to no smell. Is this normal for what I'm feeding him or should I have his stool tested?

Mucus could be a sign of colitis or parasites but it may also be normal for Tucker. I think it would be best to have his stool examined in person and tested to be sure it is nothing to be concerned about.
