My dog is uncomfortable after tick removal. Is it Lyme or just sore?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

My Boxer is 5 years old and frequently active. We run together at least 3 times a week. 4 days ago we went on a long mushroom hunt in the woods. roughly 6 total miles. He did get a tick. I removed the tick hours later. Since it seems like he is uncomfortable. Does not want to lay down. His eating habiting appear normal. His walked and sitting appear normal. He can run and still wags his nub vigorously. Is this a soreness problem? Maybe an Injury? Can Lyme's Disease set in after 36 hrs?

You are not likely to see Lyme disease in this case. The tick must be attached to the dog for at least 48 hours to transmit Lyme. It is more likely he is just sore - maybe a muscle strain. If he doesn't seem better in another 5 days or so then you should have your vet check him out to be on the safe side.
